Early every Friday afternoon Jacqueline Herrera arrives at the Mount Dennis Community Kitchen on Weston Rd to open up her “Pop-Up” food business along with other local chefs and members of the neighbourhood’s “Kitchen Collective”. Jacqueline has been creating South American and Nicaraguan cuisine for over 20 years in Canada, after arriving and studying in Montreal where she honed her culinary skills including more Canadian dishes. Frontlines After-School Kids Cooking Program – Wednesdays 3:30-5pm
This afternoon, as the kids start to stream into the Frontlines Youth Centre, all are greeted by the delicious smells of freshly baked pumpkin cake and sweet breads baked by an earlier group – the Culinary Arts Students being mentored by Frontline’s Front Burner Program. Today, both Noella Charles (Chef, Caterer and Program Facilitator) and Lenita (Program Student) have stayed behind in the kitchen to set up and prepare for the Kids Kitchen session. This is how they give back to their community – to this free afterschool drop – in program – by helping teach leadership and cooking skills every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5pm at this 1844 Weston Rd Youth Centre for children 6 to 12 years old. Supported by program volunteers, staff and Humber College placement students, this Wednesday afternoon cooking session is a highlight for the week, and the kids rush to wash their hands, put on blue hairnets as others gather around the island of ingredients and wait for their next instruction from a planned recipe. Today’s treat is a spring specialty of hot cross buns and everyone is excited to make more. If you are interested in volunteering, donating or supporting this after-school program […]
Frontlines Launches Catering Careers
Lenita Aegis (28) is completing her 4th week of an 8 week Catering Career program launched by Frontlines called Front Burners ….and she loves it. After completing the Learning Enrichment Foundation’s Hospitality Training program last year, Lenita felt she needed more of a hands-on experience and on-the-job training as she looks towards a goal of working in a bakery or catering company specializing in desserts. But all the programs she could find were located downtown and too far to attend regularly, until an employment coach told her about Frontlines. Located at 1844 Weston road, just south of Lawrence, Frontlines is a drop-in Youth Centre that runs a free after-school program for kids 6-12 yrs old. But during the day Noella Charles, runs Front Burners, a series of free culinary arts skill training sessions for 18-29 yr olds who want to learn more about Toronto’s food and catering industry. At each session, Noella mentors 5 – 6 youth and offers ongoing job placement supports in partnership with the Learning Enrichment Foundation. Lenita made her first attempt at making pumpkin cake this afternoon that she will share with the after school program participants later but insists that her real specialty and favourite […]
