This afternoon, as the kids start to stream into the Frontlines Youth Centre, all are greeted by the delicious smells of freshly baked pumpkin cake and sweet breads baked by an earlier group – the Culinary Arts Students being mentored by Frontline’s Front Burner Program.
Today, both Noella Charles (Chef, Caterer and Program Facilitator) and Lenita (Program Student) have stayed behind in the kitchen to set up and prepare for the Kids Kitchen session.
This is how they give back to their community – to this free afterschool drop – in program – by helping teach leadership and cooking skills every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5pm at this 1844 Weston Rd Youth Centre for children 6 to 12 years old.
Supported by program volunteers, staff and Humber College placement students, this Wednesday afternoon cooking session is a highlight for the week, and the kids rush to wash their hands, put on blue hairnets as others gather around the island of ingredients and wait for their next instruction from a planned recipe.
Today’s treat is a spring specialty of hot cross buns and everyone is excited to make more.
